#28 A Meadow for Meditation
After her afternoon in the library, Micia’s head was still full of flowers, stars and pages to turn. Even sitting beneath the oak, she kept thinking about the big book.
“Shall we try sitting here without doing anything?” Lillo suggested.
Franci called their friends from the yard. Pucci, Tobia, Betta, Toto and Max arrived. Everyone found a little place in the meadow.
Micia crossed her legs, rested her paws on her knees and closed her eyes.
For a moment, she heard only the wind in the leaves.
Then she thought about their snack.
Then about the little crab at the seaside.
Then she wondered whether everyone else was thinking about their snack too.
She opened one eye. Pucci was settling one paw over the other. Toto was trying to get comfortable, while Max had lowered his muzzle toward the grass.
“I keep having lots of thoughts,” Micia whispered.
“So do I,” Betta replied. “I was counting the daisies.”
Lillo smiled without opening his eyes.
“I listen to the leaves. When I get distracted, I listen to them again.”
Micia tried once more. She breathed in gently and smelled the grass. A breeze stirred her whiskers. Somewhere, an insect buzzed and then flew away.
This time, she didn’t try to guess where it was going.
They stayed like that for a few minutes, close together and peaceful, until Toto’s tummy gave a little rumble.
Pucci opened his eyes. Then Micia did. Then everyone burst out laughing.
“The meadow was quiet,” Toto said, “but I had something to add.”
Franci was the first to stand up.
“Then we’ll carry on meditating after our snack.”
Micia picked up the basket. The book could wait a little longer.
