#20 The Attic of Forgotten Toys
The morning after the village festival, Micia went up to the attic to look for an empty box. She wanted to tidy the ribbons left in the sewing drawer.
Beneath the great wooden beams stood cardboard boxes, an old trunk and folded blankets. Golden light streamed through the dormer window, making the dust sparkle in the air.
Micia lifted a sheet of crumpled paper. Underneath was a wooden train. Then she found a spinning top, a blue-and-orange ball and a rocket with a red nose cone.
“So this is where you all were!”
She sat on the rug and placed the rocket in front of her paws. As soon as she let go, though, it leaned to one side.
Micia straightened it. The rocket wobbled again.
“You can’t take off crooked.”
Among the building pieces she found a little mallet. She picked it up, but before using it she stopped to look more closely: one of the fins was resting right on a fold in the rug.
Micia steadied the rocket with one paw and kept the mallet lowered in the other.
“Perhaps you’re not the one that needs fixing.”
She moved the toy aside, smoothed out the fold and tried again. This time the rocket stayed upright.
To celebrate, she placed two blocks beside it and imagined a launch pad. The train would bring the passengers; the ball, of course, would be a planet.
When she went downstairs, Micia had found a small empty box for the ribbons. She left the toys neatly arranged on the rug, ready to show her friends.
On the stairs, she turned back toward the rocket.
“Wait for us. The journey begins after our snack.”
