#19 Piadina Under the Festival Lights
The evening after counting the stars, Micia went to the village festival with Pucci and Lillo. Strings of red, green, blue and golden bulbs shone above the square. The town hall clock rose among the rooftops.
“At least these won’t move while I count them,” Micia said.
Then such a delicious smell reached her that she forgot about the lights at once.
Beneath a striped canopy, Franci had set up a stall of Romagna specialities: stacks of warm piadina flatbreads, cheeses on wooden boards and sliced cured meats. A bowl held soft cheese as white as a cloud.
Micia chose a piadina with prosciutto, cheese and rocket. Franci folded it and handed it to her in a paper sleeve.
Micia took it in one paw and turned toward Lillo to show him. The piadina tilted, and a rocket leaf began slipping out.
“Wait!” Pucci cried.
Micia quickly placed her other paw beneath the paper. The leaf stayed on the edge, quivering slightly.
Franci smiled.
“Good things deserve two paws.”
Micia straightened the piadina and held it steady. Pucci and Lillo came closer to the counter, amused by the little rescue.
Franci made theirs too: one with prosciutto for Pucci and one with cheese and rocket for Lillo.
The three friends found a bench at the edge of the square. From there they could see the stall, the arch of festival lights and the glowing clock face on the town hall.
At last, Micia took her first bite.
“Well?” Lillo asked.
She smiled, waited until she had finished chewing and replied:
“This festival really does taste wonderful.”
