#18 Counting the Stars
That evening, after discovering the echo in the cellar, Micia joined Pucci, Tobia and Lillo in the meadow behind the farmhouse. The sky was deep blue, and the stars shone like tiny dots of gold.
Tobia stretched out in the grass. Pucci settled beside him, while Lillo wrapped his scarf more snugly around his neck.
“Shall we count them?” Micia suggested.
She started with the brightest star above the oak tree. One, two, three… At nine, Pucci pointed his little nose toward another group higher up.
Micia looked up and lost her place.
“Had I counted that one already?”
Lillo twitched an ear.
“I reached twelve, but I might have counted the same ones twice.”
Tobia smiled.
“Then we have a very crowded sky.”
Micia tried again, following a row of lights. Then she spotted a fainter one between two bright stars and stopped once more. The longer she looked, the more stars seemed to appear.
She lowered her paw, a little disappointed.
“I’ll never finish.”
Pucci tilted his head.
“Do we really have to?”
Micia was quiet for a moment. Then she raised a paw toward three stars close together.
“Those make me think of a basket.”
“I can see a carrot,” Lillo said.
Tobia looked at the same little group.
“To me, it’s a cushion.”
Pucci laughed. “You always want to lie down!”
They stayed there inventing shapes, each finding something different. When a cool breeze stirred the grass, they headed back toward the farmhouse’s glowing window.
Micia took one last look at the sky.
She had lost count, but now she knew where to find her golden basket.
